If you step back, what still works?

There's a moment every IT director recognizes. Something goes wrong, or starts heading that way, and you step in. You know where to look and what needs to happen next. You make the calls quickly and keep things moving while everything's still unsettled.

From the outside, it looks like a good recovery. The issue gets handled, things settle down, the business moves on.

What's less visible is how much of that depended on you specifically being there to do it.

Your response comes from experience, from having seen enough situations to recognize the pattern and move fast when things aren't straightforward. That's a real strength. It's also a dependency.

When the response relies on one person stepping in and holding it together, the outcome and the individual become hard to separate. Next time something similar happens, the expectation is the same: you'll do it again. And that starts to shape how the whole environment runs. Instead of process doing the work, situations get resolved through experience and intervention, one incident at a time.

That's fine when you've got the time to step in. It gets harder to sustain as the moving parts add up, or when you're simply not available.

That doesn't happen on its own. It takes stepping back from the day-to-day to actually shape those processes, and that's exactly why it keeps getting pushed. Something that's working, even if it only works because you keep showing up, never feels as urgent as something that's obviously broken.
